Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Contributions should be travel related. Once we check in 24 hrs a day , we were given 2 complimentary continental breakfast passes and 2 complimentary drinks to be used at the tikki bar.
Had one each of: Coconut Mojito, grilled fish sandwich, and an order of pretzle logs. View and ambiance gets 5-star. Did not taste fresh at all; it tasted very cheap and very frozen. The beds were amazingly comfortable with lots of pillows.
Gilbert's Resort - It's like being unhappy with your food.
Don't let the exterior discourage you from coming to this place, it's definitely, a hidden gem. Once we check in 24 hrs a day , we were given 2 complimentary continental breakfast passes and 2 complimentary drinks to be used at the tikki bar. Our room was very spacious and clean. The beds were amazingly comfortable with lots of pillows. The bathroom has a modern look to it and a great shower head. Tikki bar and restaurant on site. Lorenzo was our waiter and his last table for night. He was so down to earth and made us feel very welcome. The food was delicious , I order the chicken Philly comes with french fries , my son ordered the kids hot dogs comes with a bag of potato chips He liked how the hot dogs bun was different. On the weekends , you can find a live band performing on the the stage. Overall , I had such a great time here. I will definitely be coming back. This is my perfect getaway spot. Not too far from Miami, located inside Key largo Gilbert's resort. Is a huge restaurant by the water, with life music on the weekends, affordable drinks, good food, private beach, watersports rental. We enjoyed visiting this place, the tiki bar, the music are amazing, it has one the most beautiful views of sunset that I've ever seen. Definitely i reccomend this place if you want to stay away from Miami and don't mind a 45 minutes ride you will find a small paradise in Key Largo. My friend and I decided to meet up there and spend the day hanging out. It was a Friday and we got there early- around 11. The vibe was so nice and chill- typical Key West feel. There was lots of shaded seating under the large tiki huts or covered benches closer to the water. The space was actually pretty large, with a dining area, 2 bars, and benches in the sand. We started with some Coronas, then tried the frozen drinks. They were tasty but soooooo weak! My best friend spoke with the waitress about it and told her she was unhappy with her drink and the waitress offered to take the drink back to the bartender to see what they could do. She came back a few minutes later and the bartender had added a little more alcohol. My friend was happier with the drink then, but it also made the drink much more watery. We honestly got a better buzz from the Corona than the frozen drink.... It was sooo hot and my daughter and I got in the water and played around some and were able to rinse off in the shower they have on the deck when we got out. Great option to have that shower!! Afterwards we ordered food- my daughter had the children's hotdog and chips, I ordered a chicken Caesar salad, my friend ordered the chicken wings, and my friend's mom had the Mahi-Mahi fingers with fries. The portions were great and each plate came with a good amount of food. My daughter was happy with her food and she and I both tried the Mahi fingers and loveeeed them, but my friend did not like the Mahi fingers. I was not impressed with my salad, either. The lettuce was kind of limp and looked about 5 minutes away from going brown, and was not chilled at all. I also tried a wing and liked it too, but my friend didn't. Not sure if she was being extra picky that day, cause I liked everything BUT my salad, lol. Guess it goes to show that taste really is subjective. Service started out great but kinda wained halfway through. By then end I was having to get up to find the waitress several times and when the bill came my friend was in for a rude surprise. In all our years of drinking when the scenario has occurred where a drink was simply too weak and unenjoyable we have never, EVER been charged to have it fixed. It's like being unhappy with your food. If you aren't happy with it they send it back and fix it, they don't charge you a fee for a new plate! Also, if she was going to charge my friend she should have informed her of that and gotten her ok first. Anyway, overall we had a great time and a wonderful, relaxing, and fun day just vibing out. It felt like a mini vacation, and we would definitely return, but avoid the frozen drinks. My review is not about the Hotel, I've never stayed at the Hotel... The restaurant is outdoors and is huge. It is centered around a very large Tiki Bar area with plastic party tables and chairs all around and spilling towards the sandy beach. The waiters are swift to take your order and attentive. There is a stage area for bands to play. You can tell there is activity every weekend. Community bikers or weekend bikers constantly roll through there. The most recent day I was there Dec '17 , bikers were there doing a Christmas Toy Drive and raising money for charity. These bikers are lawyers, doctors, cops, mailmen, carpenters, and retirees on their hobby club bikes. The kitchen is very busy and is located in the main Hotel building. So workers and porter are constantly walking back and forth transporting food. This is a popular destination point for family, bikers, vacationers, and the sort. Right off US1 so you can't miss it... The food is fresh, the Burgers are great, the Chicken Wings are nice, but staff away from the Calamari. It's not bad, but not worth the price. Nice Smoked Fish Dip, and decent Fried Shrimp breading is too fine, not crunchy. Salads are nice, but it is hard to mess up a Salad. I don't do Raw Bar, so I defer. But the drinks are fantastic! In fact they are built for serving you a great drink. Beers on tap, draft, singles, pitcher, adult smoothies, and of course Wine. It is a resort, restaurant outdoors and by the beach, so I expect nothing less! No fuss to just arrive, park and go straight to the restaurant, eat, drink, and use the beach. The water is calm and you look right into the Gulf of Mexico side. You do not need a day pass or anything unlike some other beaches up north Miami. A great way to escape the fuss of Miami, relax and have great time! You will always see a beautiful sunset; but if you're lucky, you may see Dolphins jumping out of the water and playing. Restaurant review: I've been to Gilbert's a few times throughout the years, but I think this may have been the first time I actually ate there. I went on a Monday late afternoon in January. It was pretty quiet as anticipated , but I definitely prefer the quiet than a rowdy crowd. We seated ourselves at a table right next to the water; the view was so lovely and serene. There was live music; they were playing mostly beachy-type country, which is my absolute favorite. This is what I love about the keys, and Gilbert's definitely has the amazing view and vibes to offer. We waited for quite a while for someone to attend our table; we finally had to wave someone down. We placed our orders at that moment since we anticipated service to be pretty slow. I had a blue moon which came quickly and was served ice cold, ah. However, I also tried the pina colada but didn't care for it at all - it was completely tasteless and not at all worth what it cost. I had a blackened mahi sandwich. It was the absolute most disappointing mahi sandwich I have ever had, hands down. It shouldn't be called a mahi sandwhich - it should be called grilled cheese on wheat toast with an incredibly thin sliver of fish in the middle. Seriously could hardly even taste the mahi.... The fries were good though. The coconut shrimp was also super disappointing. Did not taste fresh at all; it tasted very cheap and very frozen. Service was okay - not good but not awful either. View and ambiance gets 5-star. Got the Islamorada ale- a little too hoppy but ok. My husband got the Pussers Painkiller and it wasn't very good either.. The atmosphere was ok, outside tiki bar. We wanted to go there after years of driving by it and never getting the chance to stop. Probably won't be back. I've been here a couple of times, my latest visit was yesterday. Beach area is very small and has a lot of rocks, but that's typical of areas of The Keys. Tiki Bar is right on the water, which I like. Catching the sunset is always nice, we like to go later in the day and stay until 7:30-8 pm. Aww, your browser has JavaScript turned off! Did you know that JavaScript does the following? Example: There are a few times in life when a meal is so expertly crafted and planned that it is nothing short of genius. Last night, I had one of those meals - the Mahi Mahi. The dish was excellently prepared. Grilled, juicy, and fresh without a hint of fishiness. A glaze of tangerine sauce brought a hint of tart sweetness. The fish was placed on a mound of sweet plantain rice. The combination of the fish and rice alone was to die for! However, as only expert chefs can achieve, additional garnishes provided even bolder, beautiful tastes. Pickled onions topping the fish made for an even finer taste experience, while green beans hidden under the fish added freshness and completed each bite Established in 1903.
